Morro Bay Celebrates the Local Superfood: The Avocado

According to the California Avocado Commission, Americans are snacking more now than ever and over half report healthfulness as a key factor when making food and beverage decisions. Now in season superfood avocados grown in Morro Bay, California are a natural snacking choice for health-conscious consumers.

Bursting with great taste and nutrition, a serving of California Avocado (1/5 of a medium avocado) has 50 calories and contributes nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Avocados are virtually the only fruit with good monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat. Those good fats do not raise LDL “bad” cholesterol levels.

One fifth of a medium avocado (1oz.) contributes nearly 20 vitamins and minerals, including 4% of the recommended Daily Value (DV) for vitamin E, 4% vitamin C, 8% folate, 4% fiber, 2% iron, 4% potassium, with 81 micrograms of lutein and 19 micrograms of beta-carotene.
Avocados acts as a "nutrient booster" by enabling the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients, such as alpha and beta-carotene as well as lutein, in foods that are eaten with the fruit.

According to the USDA's Agricultural Research Service, California avocados contain a complex package of phytonutrients, including carotenoids that may provide numerous healthy benefits. These and other plant compounds appear to protect humans against certain cancers, heart disease and age-related macular degeneration. They may also play a role in preventing oxidative damage and may help enhance the immune system, reduce inflammation and detoxify contaminants.

Morro Bay Avocados are solely grown in San Luis Obispo County, the northernmost avocado growing region in California. These avocados are supremely rich and creamy with exeptionally high oil content. The superior eating experience is due to the cooler production climate that slows the tree's metabolism and in turn the fruit's maturing process. In some cases, Morro Bay Avocados have hung on the trees up to 18 months! Morro Bay Avocado growers take pride in this unique late season crop of avocados. Fall is the best time to enjoy these California hass avocados at their peak. Morro Bay Avocados are packed and shipped by Del Rey Avocado in Fallbrook, CA.

Morro Creek Ranch, a family-owned agricultural operation (formerly a portion of the original Morro y Cayucos Spanish Land Grant), started in 1978 with the purchase of 348 acres straddling Highway 41 approximately two miles east of Highway 1 and the coastal town of Morro Bay, CA. Robert Staller, the Resident Co-managing General partner, has been in production and reclamation agriculture for over 55 years. He came upon the California property in San Luis Obispo County and purchased it after developing the irrigation system and doing extensive soil and climate analyses to determine that the Hass avocado variety (the most popular variety worldwide) could grow and prosper in this well-defined micro-climate. In the ensuing thirty years an extensive Hass avocado orchard planting was established and we currently harvest the production of over 27,000 trees to various California packers who then grade, pack, and ship our Hass avocados all over the world.

Avocados grown in the area can be purchased at the Morro Creek Ranch Country Store, area grocery stores and at the Morro Bay Farmer's Markets held on Thursdays and Saturdays each week.

As a way to celebrate this superfood, the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce created an annual event for residents and visitors alike every September. The Morro Bay Avocado and Margarita Festival is the annual avocado festival, which takes place over a weekend in mid-September bringing together California Avocado lovers from all over the world.
